After watching "The Blind Side", I was left with this thought, "it was really motivating... with a simple Christian label." By that, I will explain what I mean later. I do want to say that I was truly inspired by how the story captured a good Samaritan's achievement in helping a young, African-American kid succeed from the projects to the NFL. It amused me to see a good family, like the Tuohy's, take disarrayed moments very lightly. I was fascinated as to how they raised their children, by providing them with the importance of having literary values, good family unity, and disregarding bad talk when accomplishing good outcomes.
For those who don't know about "The Blind Side", the film is about a well-to-do family in the suburbs who legally adopt an African-American teen, Michael Oher, from a troubled home. Leigh Anne Tuohy, played by Sandra Bullock, a determined and direct woman, along with her cordial family, led Michael into becoming the man that he now is in the sports industry.
Moving into the "really motivating... with a simple Christian label", Christianity in today's society is considered to be nothing but a label of 'good works'. At times, this form of branding can be displayed even among our own Christian community. What is that to a real Christian when according to the rest of humanity we ALL have a responsibility to be good? When a non-Christian cares for the unfortunate and feeds the orphans just as much as the Christian does? Must a born-again believer be left to work a double-shift in this field to overturn the deeds of those who aren't? What separates a Christian from a non-Christian when it comes down to "good deeds"? The answer lies in that person's audience and motivation.
Nothing can be more satisfying than to see a Christian moved to do good for the audience of One, in God, and the motivation to derive from a heart that magnifies the wondrous works of Jesus dying for our sins. That's a HUGE difference. In a small part of the film, Mrs. Tuohy sadly asked her husband if she was a "good person". He responded by pointing her to her charity works and confirming her goodness. Folks, that's not the answer. As the great carer of orphans, George Mueller, said, "Work with all your might, but trust not the least in your works." The only good deed you need to depend on to make you good is the deed finished on the cross by Jesus Christ, your Savior. I hope that the real Mrs. Touhy knows that. That scene really burdened me. So many people going to see it, who may begin basing their salvation on works.
Overall, "Blind Side" seems to be doing well financially in theaters. It opened up on the same weekend New Moon came out, and it is still thriving. After achieving domestically $200 million by the beginning of this year, it has become the top grossing sports drama in the history of film.
Please, let this film encourage your hearts to do more good for the sake of others. Just keep in mind, however, of Christ's righteousness imputed in you because of His unfailing grace. Let that be your motivation. While the world glories in self, God's children ought to glory in Him.
