Life’s Little, Big Moments

PoorBest

Woman_in_checkout_-_Copy“Blessed are the merciful, for they shall obtain mercy”

Last week, standing in line at the grocery store, without warning and without anticipation, one of life’s “Big Moments” happened.

The Gift – how good do I have to be in order to receive it?

PoorBest

giftA few days ago, I over-heard a young mother threatening her misbehaving child with this old familiar standby, “Santa’s not going to bring you any presents if you don’t behave!”  While it may be a common coercion, my heart immediately cringed.

Rethinking Evangelism

PoorBest
Jacksonville Christian Evangelism Frank ViolaThe subject before the house today is evangelism. Please read the entire post else you’ll very likely misunderstand the whole discussion.
With few exceptions, every traditional church I’ve ever been a part of emphasized evangelism to be God’s grand goal. And every believer was divinely obligated to share the gospel with lost souls.
As I’ve pointed out elsewhere, this sentiment is fairly recent, harkening back to the teachings of D.L. Moody. Moody, who was a gifted evangelist, had his paradigm circulate through mainstream evangelicalism through Bible colleges all across America. (Moody Bible Institute was among the very first). His paradigm is now in the drinking water of modern-day evangelicalism.

The Seven Modern Gospel Closes

PoorBest
Sales_pitchThere’s a lot of confusion about the Gospel these days. For the last week or so (yes I know you’re not supposed to begin a sentence with a preposition), I’ve been seriously exploring the subject of “What is the gospel that is the power of God unto salvation?”

In the process of looking for the good news, I found myself pondering all the other gospels that have been, and are being marketed in our world. It seems we keep changing the product to suit the consumer rather than the opposite!

THE SOUND OF GRACE

Jacksonville Christian Evangelism Prayer"Amazing grace, how sweet the sound, that saved a wretch like me. I once was lost but now I'm found, was blind but now I see." John Newton 1725-1807

The famous hymn "Amazing Grace" was penned by John Newton as a result of his conversion to Christianity in the midst of a violent storm. The captain of a slave ship, Newton was a vile man, prone to profanity and mockery, but as his ship was about to be lost at sea, and a crew member was swept overboard, he cried out to God, "Lord have mercy upon us!"
